Painting

Sailing Date: September 22nd, 2007 Medium: Oil Size: 20" by 16"

Info

This is a sailboat making its way through the fog as a photographer captures the scene. The photographer also caught a bit of lens flare. This painting is not actually based on any photo, but it is a combination of pieces from multiple mental images.

I did the background several months before the rest of the painting, but I lost interest in the landscape scene I was planning to create. It sat in my closet collecting a coat of dust and attacking me with the smell of oils each time I dared to open the closet. During a whale-watching trip, I thought of the idea of adding a sailboat to the painting after witnessing the start of a sailboat race. The fog came from my opinion that I had failed at my previous attempt (the mist in the previous painting), so I wanted to make another attempt and see if I could learn a bit more. This fog came out somewhat better, but could still use a lot of work. The lens flair is from my increasing interest in photography.
